Our Boom Operators (also known as the First Assistant Sound) are more than just microphone holders. They play a critical role in capturing clean, natural dialogue while working hand-in-hand with the Production Sound Mixer and the rest of the crew. With technical skill, physical precision, and on-set awareness, our Boom Ops ensure that your production audio is usable, intelligible, and emotionally honest.

BOOM OPERATING SERVICES

Not every production needs a full sound team, but when clarity and performance matter, a Boom Operator is essential.

Consider bringing on a Boom Op when:

  • You are shooting dialogue-heavy scenes and want the best possible sound without relying solely on lavs.

  • Blocking or camera movement is complex, requiring someone to follow talent while maintaining optimal mic position.

  • You are working with a cast that values performance, and want to preserve the original takes without re-recording.

  • You are mixing multiple characters in the same space and need separation for each voice.

  • You want to minimize ADR and keep post costs down by capturing clean production audio from the start.

A dedicated Boom Op supports your mixer, your actors, and your story. It can make the difference between good audio and great audio.

WHEN TO HIRE A BOOM OP

Atlanta First Assistant Sound

The Boom Operator is responsible for positioning the microphone to capture the best possible sound without entering the camera frame. This requires a deep understanding of scene blocking, lighting setups, lens selection, and performance timing. They anticipate movement, adjust mic angles in real time, and work closely with talent and camera to preserve sound quality without disrupting the shoot.

WHAT WE DO

Our Boom Ops:

  • Expertly place shotgun microphones above or below frame to isolate clean dialogue.

  • Collaborate  with the Production Sound Mixer to determine the best mic approach for each scene.

  • Coordinate with camera, grip, and lighting departments to avoid shadows and stay out of frame.

  • Follow actors' dialogue and physical movement with accuracy and timing.

  • Assist with lavalier mic placement & concealment when a Sound Utility is not present.

  • Manage booms, poles, shock mounts, and wind protection to ensure reliable performance in all conditions.

  • Assist with timecode sync and coordination between departments.

  • Supporting troubleshooting of mics, transmitters, and receivers on set.

CAPTURE THE PERFORMANCE, NOT JUST THE WORDS

A well-placed boom captures dialogue with clarity, warmth, and dimension that lavs can't replicate. Our Boom Operators are skilled at staying agile on set, adapting to camera movement and blocking while keeping the mic precisely positioned and out of frame.

They protect performances, minimize the need for ADR, and deliver clean tracks that make post faster and more efficient. Strong boom work preserves the emotional intent of each take and gives your editor more flexibility from the start.
